Concert Spirituel
St George’s, Wash Common, RG14 6NU

What? Never heard of Gilles and his Requiem?!
Jean Gilles died in 1705 but his Messe des morts soon became famous and remains widely recorded today. Not surprising, as it’s ravishingly beautiful and speaks directly and simply - almost as if baroque music enters a minimalist phase. We present the original version, unadorned, and accompanied by period instruments.
Michel-Richard de Lalande’s De profundis is also an iconic work of the time. Both works were often programmed in the ParisianConcert Spirituel - one of the first concert series that was open to the public. Our programme is completed by a motet by André Campra, Gilles’ predecessor at the cathedral in Toulouse and works for lute & theorbo.
Be sure not to miss this rare taste of eighteenth century France!
