Gilbert & Sullivan: Trial by Jury Edward Lambert: The Cloak and Dagger Affair
Arts for Hungerford presents a double-bill of short operas featuring Newbury Chamber Choir and The Music Troupe.
Trial by Jury was the first G & S collaboration, and an immensely funny and successful work it certainly proved to be. In this new version, we turn the story inside out: will it involve a same-sex marriage, or will it be cross-dressing in the way of operatic convention? Either way, all ends happily even if the judge is of uncertain gender.
The Music Troupe perform another new mini-opera by Edward Lambert following the success of their trip to Hungerford last autumn. This time the plot is taken from a play by Federico Garcia Lorca. The bookish Don Perlimplín has suddenly taken a wife: does Belisa care for him despite her apparent infidelities? And who is the stranger in the red cloak seen wandering in the garden after their wedding? Belisa is besotted by him, yet Perlimplín doesn’t seem to mind…

James Maunders: Yaldo Victoria: Missa O magnum Mysterium
We present the first performance of a work by local composer and musician James Maunders. Yaldo ('The Nativity') is a cantata whose musical material draws on Hebraic and Syriac modes and dance meters from around the Eastern Mediterranean.
This short advent concert also features one of the greatest works by Tomás Luis de Victoria, the most famous composer of renaissance Spain.
