"Stories of Christmas"
Edward Lambert & anon: Brighter than the Sun
Heinrich Schütz: The Christmas Story

Fleur de Bray soprano
Daniel Joy tenor
Samuel Lom bass

Brighter than the Sun is a medley on the theme of the Annunciation - when the Angel appeared to Mary telling her she would give birth to Jesus. The subject of many an Old Master painting, it is here represented by a suite of medieval carols and scenes from the Mystery Plays. The Christmas Story is Schütz’ much-loved work, here rendered into the timeless English of the King James Bible to make the narrative accessible for all. Featuring angels, shepherds, wise men and Herod, no music delivers the Christmas message more colourfully or joyfully.

With music spanning 800 years of history and three fabulous young soloists with an instrumental ensemble, this Sunday afternoon concert  is a perfect meditation on the timeless message of Christmas.

We would be delighted to welcome some new members in the New Year. There are no auditions - we rely on common sense and mutual assessment! We take our singing seriously, as befits a choir of about 36, and we are pretty good musicians and readers, so we don't spend ages note-bashing. However, we have fun rehearsing and performing some great music, exploring, as often as not, some of the byways of classical music, as well as some of the highways. Our repertory stretches back to the 13th century, and we have recently had new works written specially for us; most of the time, however, we sing music of the 17th and 18th centuries and these concerts are accompanied by specialist professionals playing period instruments. We're proud of the standard we achieve.
Future concerts:
December: medieval carols and Schütz - Christmas Story
February 2020: Haydn - Nelson Mass and Mozart - Vespers de confessore
April 2020: Alessandro & Domenico Scarlatti and Lotti - Mass, Requiem, Magnificat
October 2020: Handel - Acis & Galatea
December 2020: Beethoven and Cherubini

We are professionally led by Edward Lambert, our musical director, who's has had a wealth of experience conducting and coaching, and by Susan Holmes, our accompanist. We rehearse Tuesdays 7:45 to 9:45pm (max) from September to June during school terms at St Nicolas Junior School, Link Road, Newbury RG14 7LY.
Rehearsals for the new season start on 17th September.
