Musical Director - Ben de Souza

The Victoria Requiem, also known as "Officium Defunctorum" or "Missa pro defunctis," is a renowned choral composition by the Spanish Renaissance composer Tomás Luis de Victoria. It was composed in 1603 and was dedicated to the Empress Maria of Austria, who was Victoria's patron.
Victoria's Requiem is considered one of the most significant and profound compositions of the Renaissance period. It is a polyphonic setting of the Latin Requiem Mass, which is a musical form that commemorates the souls of the deceased and seeks eternal rest and salvation for them.
The Requiem is composed for four voice parts—soprano, alto, tenor, and bass—and is predominantly sung a cappella (without instrumental accompaniment). It is written in a contrapuntal style, with overlapping melodic lines and intricate harmonies that create a dense and expressive texture.
Schubert's Rondo in A major is a delightful and virtuosic piece written for solo violin and string orchestra. It follows a rondo form, which is characterized by the recurrence of a main theme (the refrain) interspersed with contrasting sections.
The composition begins with a lively and energetic refrain played by the solo violin, which sets the joyful and exuberant mood of the piece. The theme is then explored and developed through a series of variations, showcasing Schubert's melodic inventiveness and his ability to create engaging musical dialogue between the soloist and the accompanying string orchestra.
Schubert's Mass in G showcases his gift for melody and his ability to create expressive and emotionally rich music. It combines elements of the Classical style with a Romantic sensibility, featuring beautiful melodies, rich harmonies, and a careful balance between choral and orchestral forces.
Despite its musical brilliance, the Mass in G was not performed during Schubert's lifetime, and it was only discovered and published posthumously in the 1870s. Since then, it has become a beloved part of the choral repertoire and continues to be performed in concert halls and churches around the world.
