About |
The Newbury Chamber Choir was founded as the Newbury Singers by Gerald Finzi in the 1940’s. Giving three or four concerts a year it has become known for reviving works outside the mainstream choral repertory and presenting them in new and accessible ways, as well as for the quality of its performances of more familiar pieces. The choir’s concerts have spanned several centuries of music - from the thirteenth to the twenty-first.
“A browse through previous concerts by Newbury Chamber Choir is revealing. Its members have contributed their share of Handel and Vivaldi, Mozart and Brahms. But what intrigues is its eye-catching less familiar repertoire. Newbury’s capable, well-tuned choir prides itself on including music undeservingly overlooked.” (Roderic Dunnet, Church Times, February 2017) The choir is supported by the Greenham Common Trust and Newbury Building Society. There are no auditions and enquiries from prospective members are welcomed. |
Join us!
We are a committed group of singers who enjoy performing a wide range of classical music while focusing on our core repertory of baroque and classical masterpieces. The choir performs with professional players, on historical instruments where appropriate, and gives valuable opportunities to young students and up-coming artists.
We are...a vibrant mixture of about 36, of all ages, from many different walks of life, with a shared love of making good-quality music together.
Most of our members are experienced in choral singing, and are quite good sight-readers. We hold no auditions because we want to maintain our policy of openess to all but ask that new members join us on a mutual trial. Although we work hard at our music, we are also a friendly and sociable group.
We rehearse every Tuesday evening from 8pm to 9.45pm at St Nicolas Junior School, Link Road, Newbury RG14 7LY (where there is ample safe parking around). If you are interested in joining us, please get in touch initially with Gill Careless, the Secretary email.
